MA Human Rights graduate Haifa Rashed speaks at the Human Rights Council in Geneva

Thursday 27 September 2012

Haifa Rashed, who graduated from the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in December 2011, is currently the Human Rights & Refugees Programme Assistant at the Quaker UN Office, Geneva (QUNO).

Haifa attended and read a statement at the 21st session of the UN Human Rights Council on behalf of Friends World Committee for Consultation (Quakers), welcoming the reference to children of those sentenced to death in the Secretary General’s latest report on the death penalty. The issue of children of incarcerated parents, including those whose parents are sentenced to death is one of the focal topics of QUNO’s Human Rights & Refugees programme.

Haifa, commenting on how the Institute’s MA in Human Rights programme has benefited her career, said: “My Human Rights MA from the School of Advanced Study has been incredibly useful for me in terms of securing this post and providing me with the fundamental knowledge and understanding of human rights law and practice.”
