History of the School
The School of Advanced Study was founded by the University of London in August 1994 as a federation of 10 of the University's research institutes in the humanities and social sciences. The institutes already functioned as centres of international excellence to facilitate advanced study in their respective fields for the benefit of the national scholarly community as a whole.
The School's mission, then as now, is to support and promote individual and collaborative research in the humanities and social sciences, not just in London, but throughout the United Kingdom and beyond.
The constituent Institutes of the School vary in age from the Institute of Historical Research founded in 1921 to the Institute of Musical Research and the Institute of Philosophy created in August 2005.
